Situation Interactive brought me on to add graphics and polish to their Gala Video for International Rescue Committee. Starring a stunning spoken word performance by Utkarsh Ambudkar, the surrounding space needed to be filled with press-style headlines and captivating b-roll that could reinforce the importance of this message. In the end, I think what was achieved is both elegant and worthy of attention. Sound Design by the incomparable Jesse Thaul.

Process Notes:
SI handed off the edit from their shoot with Utkarsh as well as 80 headline PNG’s, which I then brought into animation — carefully pairing important phrases with corresponding b-roll in roving mortises. Much of the b-roll footage was handheld and shaky, which felt distracting against Utkarsh’s measured delivery. Twixtor provided a great solution to make clips feel graceful. Finally, keying Utkarsh was tricky due to the soft tone-on-tone palette of the footage, but I got to play around with new content aware capabilities in After Effects, as well as go-to’s like roto-brush and Red Giant’s Primatte Keyer to land great results.
